Hi Rebecca, and thanks for your questions! I wrote the book Coming of Age when I was a senior in high school--I was about 17 at the time. I didn't go to a high school like Centennial in the book. I went to a high school in a small town called Littleton Colorado. The school I attended was similar to the school that Ruthie used to go to. My high school had a majority white population, and as a black girl, sometimes I felt out of place. My family attended a black church (in the US churches are often segregated--not really because of racism but more because the practice of worship is different--people in black churches are more vocal in worship (PRAISE GOD! HALLELUJAH!). My friends at church would laugh at me sometimes because I sounded more "white." I also spoke with a big vocabulary, but that was because I read so many books! I based the school on a school that some of my friends attended--a school that was very mixed: black people, white people, rich and poor, Mexican and Asian. I thought it would be a good setting for a story about life in high school. The experiences of the characters are fiction, but I based some events in the book on things that happened to me and my friends. I wanted the book to be "true to life" as I saw it, and not just a fantasy story. It's interesting to look at Coming of Age now because I wrote it when I was the same age as the characters, and now the characters are the same age as the students I teach in Atlanta GA! Even in 2007, so many things are the same as they were in 1990, when the book was written!
